DRY FOOD

Your new rabbit has been fed on Dodson & Horrell rabbit pellets. You have been supplied with at least a weeks worth of this feed. Feed your rabbit only on this food for the first few days and the gradually introduce your own food. Try not to feed a ‘mix’ type of food as it encourages selective feeding which is not good for the health of your rabbit. Your rabbit also needs additional fibre in the diet because of the complicated digestive system a rabbit has. Barley straw or hay should be provided for this purpose. Your rabbit has been used to barley straw so if you wish to introduce hay, do so gradually.

GREEN FOOD

Your rabbit is NOT used to eating fruit, vegetables or grass. If you do wish to introduce green stuffs into the diet, do it very gradually to prevent an upset stomach. Remember, grass is extremely rich in the Spring and can cause severe stomach upsets. Never, ever, feed lettuce!!! Always check your rabbit’s droppings. Droppings should be round, hard and dry. Rabbits also produce night time droppings which are softer and stuck together in groups. Generally the rabbit eats these, but some may remain in the hutch. Droppings should not be runny, sticky or smelly. Due to the small size of a rabbit acute diarrhoea can be fatal. So if you have any concerns, consult your vet immediately.

WATER

Clean water should be provided at all times. Your rabbit is used to using a water bottle.

BEDDING

Rex rabbits have much less fur on the under side of the feet than normal furred rabbits. Because of this they need lots of bedding to prevent sore hocks. They should have wood shavings, to soak up urine, topped with a thick layer of barley straw (which is also used as food). Hamster bedding, newspaper & sawdust should NOT be used.
